This month’s meeting, held earlier tonight on April 18th, featured Amrit Manhas and a discussion of economic development in Nanaimo.
After hearing Amrit speak, I have a much clearer picture of the growth in Nanaimo’s local economy, and what’s driving it. Here are the high points:
- Local population in Nanaimo is growing mostly from people moving here, not more people being born here. That means that business people and consumers between the age of 40-ish and 60-isnow form the bulk of our local population.
- The local consumer base is about 350,000 people, even though Nanaimo itself only has about 86,000 people in it. We attract consumers from all of the surrounding communities.
- Amrit’s office is not just mandated to provide support for big business, but for the bulk of business in the area, which is small business – over 75% of businesses in Nanaimo are small businesses, employing less than 20 people each.
- You want stats? She’s got ‘em: where your business should locate in Nanaimo, how many other businesses are in your sector, how many potential customers there are, how to reach them via non-traditional marketing methods, help with press and social media, and get this: everything they offer is FREE.
- Starting a business? Her office has a booklet that will help you do everything you need, from your licensing to your location. They want to make it easy for you to start your company and keep it running smoothly.
- Trying to not just attract new customers, but keep the ones you have? They have all sorts of info about client retention, advertising, and other stuff that might surprise you.
How do you take advantage of all this FREE help? Why, you simply visit their website at Nanaimo.ca, and click on the blue link in the toolbar titled “Business”. Her office has many programs and staff who are available to help you on a one-on-one business. If they don’t do it themselves, they will refer you to someone who can. Think of them as your “little black book” for your company!
Thanks again, Amrit!
